Recently the Trudeau government announced a three-year exemption on the carbon tax for home heating oil. This exemption will primarily benefit families in Atlantic Canada, where a greater percentage of households use heating oil compared to the rest of the country; 40 per cent of households in Atlantic Canada heat their homes with heating oil compared to just 0.4 per cent here in Saskatchewan. Natural gas is our primary source of home heating, with 85 per cent of Saskatchewan households having natural gas furnaces.

It was with shock and sadness that the world watched violence unfold in Israel. That is why our government announced $100,000 of immediate emergency aid to the humanitarian organization Canadian Magen David Adom for Israel (CDMA). Based in Montreal, the CDMA is the sole authorized fund-raising organization within Canada dedicated to supplying ambulances, medical equipment, supplies and blood testing kits to support the lifesaving efforts in Israel. This donation demonstrates Saskatchewan’s unwavering support for Israel, and condemnation of the horrific terrorist attacks waged against civilians at the hands of Hamas and Hezbollah. We stand with the people of Israel during this tragic time and pray for all of those affected by this terrorist attack.

Our government was extremely dismayed by the decision of the court blocking implementation of the Parental Inclusion and Consent policy – a policy which has the strong support of a majority of Saskatchewan residents; in particular, parents. This past month has reminded us just how unpredictable weather on the prairies can be. At the start of April, a winter snowstorm hit many areas. Around Maple Creek, SaskPower crews and contractors replaced more than 600 power poles while repairing 50 kilometres of power lines. This past weekend, more damage was recorded as another storm rolled in with nearly 25,000 customers in southeast Saskatchewan left without power.

A solemn ceremony was held in Regina as Members of the Legislative Assembly and the Saskatchewan Ukrainian community paid tribute to lives lost during Holodomor from 1932 through 1933. This genocide was the Soviet Union imposed famine that led to the deaths of up to 10 million people. Despite a record harvest, the Soviet government confiscated crops and imposed regulations preventing people from finding or receiving food. Holodomor means "extermination by hunger" in Ukrainian. Canada has the third-highest population of Ukrainians globally, and the local community will honour Holodomor Saturday, November 27th.

About Greg

Greg was first elected as the MLA for Yorkton in the 2007 provincial election. He was re-elected in 2011, 2016 and 2020.

Prior to being elected, Greg owned and operated a private environmental and waste disposal business. He is an avid motorsports enthusiast and commercial/search and rescue pilot.

Greg has been married to his high school sweetheart, Leone, since 1986. They have two daughters, Katelin, son-in-law Mark and two grandchildren, Raya and Malaya, and Rayanne, son-in-law, Austin, a granddaughter, Wynnslet, and grandsons Otto and Crew.

In 1998, Greg and Leone started "Brayden Ottenbreit Close Cuts for Cancer," an event that encourages volunteers to shave their heads to raise money for cancer research. The charity is named in honour of their son, Brayden, who lost his battle with cancer in 2000 at age 5. Over $1 million has been raised for cancer research and local cancer initiatives. In recognition of these efforts, they received the Community Merit Award in 2016, presented by the Yorkton Chamber of Commerce, as well as national recognition from the Canadian Cancer Society.

For their community involvement and volunteerism, Greg and Leone were awarded the Saskatchewan Centennial Medal in 2005. In 2012, Greg received the Hal Rogers Fellow Award, the highest honour presented by the Kinsmen of Canada. Leone and Greg were also awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal and recently both received the Queen Elizabeth ll Platinum Jubilee Medal.

Greg was appointed Government Whip on November 9, 2020. He served as Minister of Highways and Infrastructure, and Minister responsible for the Water Security Agency from August 2019 to October 2020. He also served as Minister Responsible for Rural and Remote Health from September 2014 to August 2019 as well as Minister responsible for Saskatchewan-Ukraine relations from 2015-2020.

Prior to his time in cabinet, Greg worked as a Legislative Secretary to the Minister of Social Services (Community-Based Organizations initiative), a Legislative Secretary to the Minister of Environment (Recycling), and as a Legislative Secretary to the Premier (Vulnerable Youth). Greg has also previously served as Deputy Government Whip as well as Whip and as Chair of the Standing Committee on Human Services.
